What’s the first question most people ask when meeting you for the first time? For me, it’s what you do for a living? When I tell them I’m an Instructional Technologist, I either get a confused look or the inevitable follow up question, “What’s that?”
Instructional Technologists duties vary depending upon the educational environment, but the key part of the title is “Instructional.” Technology is part of the job, of course, but the underlying reason to use the technology is to support instruction. Instructional Technologists are trained in pedagogy and technology and how to use them together to improve student learning. So, what does an Instructional Technologist do?
